LI Coal Clean Coal Gasification (LICCG) is a multi-faceted company based in South Africa. It is a diversified entity that has diversified into a group of companies that range from coal to farming, renewable energy, and our core business operations include coal prospecting, clean coal gasification, coal exploration, and coal exports using our slots at Richard Bay’s MPT and RBCTQ, as well as running a coal mine in Mpumalanga and developing other coal assets in KwaZulu Natal and Limpopo.
We have developed strong relationships and strategic partnerships with end users and trading companies in India, China, London, and Geneva in order to supply them with South African thermal and anthracite coal.

Our Genesis
Our society and economy is built on the energy sector. Without power plants, we wouldn’t be able to provide all of the planet’s inhabitants with food, water, energy, or gas. In a sense, energy equates to life.
Where we started
LI Coal Clean Coal Gasification began by focusing on coal, and one of its primary functions was exporting 6000 kcal nar, RB2 and RB3 through the Richard’s Bay MPT and RBCTQ port, both for small nuts and large nuts, as well as for the domestic market for grade C coal peas for industrial customers such as the steel industry, and duff and spiral for the cement industry
Our export journey
LI Coal Clean Coal Gasification exported RB3 specification on a FOR basis at various sites in Mpumalanga and also through Richards Bay MPT and RBCTQ Port, with access to wagons from Transnet but due to the challenges of locomotive availability at Transnet we have been relying on trucking the coal to MPT.

To support our economic growth, South Africa’s economy requires massive investment in the power sector. “Rising unemployment needs to be factored into a sober assessment of what should be done to balance our energy mix while taking care of the environment.”
Why clean coal gasification?
Clean coal technology can help balance jobs, growth, and the environment. Utilizing coal’s chemical characteristics is made easier through gasification. Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), Energy Fuels (Methanol and Ethanol), Fertilizer-Grade Ammonia, and Petrochemicals can all be made from synthetic gas created during the gasification of coal.
It is important to note that gasification results in very low gaseous emissions of conventional (non-GHG) pollutants due to the nature of the process operation. It also offers a potentially low-margin route for capturing the resulting CO2 by-product for either geological storage or enhanced oil recovery.
LI Coal Clean Coal Gasification has secured support from IDC for both the coal mining of a 260 million-ton reserve, of which 34 million have already been proven with mining rights, water use licenses, and gasification projects.
LI Coal Resources has demonstrated the viability of this project and has secured markets for syngas. The coal gasification plant is likely to produce about 42 million GJ of syngas per year for the next 25 years.
